CAMP KESUM

Camp Kesem at the University of Florida is a student-run chapter of a nonprofit organizationdedicated to providing a weeklong summer camp and year-round resources for children affectedby a parent’s cancer, at absolutely no cost to their families. Camp Kesem seeks to offer a supportive, inclusive, and fun community for children in Gainesville and the broader North Florida area who benefit greatly from healthy social interaction and recreational opportunities. Camp Kesum benefits the Alachua County community by ensuring that no child enduring the tumultuous process of watching a parent battle cancer, and in many cases losing that parent, must struggle alone.

Satchel's is happy to help Camp Kesum as it raises approximately $75,000, to guarantee that no family hoping to register a camper at our summer camp will ever be waitlisted or denied, and to ensure that the facilities and food we provide to our campers are safe and high-quality.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES TASK FORCE

The Indigenous Peoples Task Force's mission is to acknpoledge and honor all of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Caribbean as the first people and respect their cultural heritage. IPTF showcases this cultural heritage by inviting indigenous people to share through dance, storytelling and artistic expression. By doing so, IPTF uplifts communities that have been diminished, dismessed or abolished for thousands of years, and recognize them as important contributors to the shared history of the Americas, pre-Columbus.

Satchel's provided funding to support visiting storytellers and artists on their recent visit to Gainesville during Indigenous Peoples Week.

UF VETERANS OUTREACH

The Veterans Outreach Program (VOP) is a student-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring and supporting veterans while strengthening connections between veterans, University of Florida students, and the greater Gainesville community. With more than 200 student members, VOP provides opportunities for students to serve and connect with veterans through volunteering, outreach, fundraising, and community events. Our mission is centered on companionship and community engagement, recognizing the meaningful impact that consistent social connection and support can have on veterans while giving students an opportunity to express gratitude toward those who have served.

Satchel's is happy to sponsor this connective organization. What a great way to build community and understanding between several generations and backgrounds!

WGOT LOCAL RADIO

In 2001, the Civic Media Center applied for a low-power FM permit, planting the seed for what would become a vital community voice. After years of waiting, Gainesville finally got its own community radio station when WGOT-LP began broadcasting in January of 2008.

Originally, we shared the 94.7 frequency with two other stations and could only broadcast for a few hours each day. But in 2017, WGOT moved to its own dedicated channel at 100.1 FM and began the 24/7 operations that continue to serve our community today.

Satchel's loves local radio! Local Radio is available to everyone and is a valuable source of information, community events, interviews and music!

WORKING FOOD

Working Food works to cultivate a resilient local food community in North Central Florida. They envision a community where young people, neighbors, and farmers grow food, share the bounty, and nurture a thriving local food web that sustains us all. Working Food's Youth gardens serve our community as living classrooms. Children and teenagers aged 3-18 are offered weekly classes, paid internships, and camps. Many come from families facing hunger and limited access to outdoor learning spaces. With this initiative, more youth in Alachua County will have access to hands-on experiences with food, leading to both immediate changes in kids’ lives and a greater understanding of their role in the larger food web.

Satchel's is a long time cheerleader for Working Food and all it's programs. Gainesville is a better place because Working Food is located here!
