SATCH GIVING in 2020

2020 has been a strange year for restaurants and everyone because of the Covid19 pandemic. When our restaurant was shut down except for takeout in mid March and 26 employees laid off, we also suspended the grants for a while. We made less money from our ATMs and decided not to give tiny amounts to charities that weren't able to hold the events we were helping to fund. Our giving in 2020 breaks down like this:

GIFT CARDS

Even though most organizations could not hold in-person events we did support several organizations with over $1,000 in gift cards for online raffles and virtual gatherings. 

Meridian, Children Beyond Borders, ALZs Place, Girl Scouts, Climb for Cancer, Habitat for Humanity, Days for Girls, Corner Drug Store, Windsor Volunteer Fire Dept, YNOT Theater, Equality Florida, Keep Alachua County Beautiful, Alachua County Crisis Center and many more non profits.

SATCHEL'S CAPITAL GRANT 2020

Satchel’s awards $12,000 to GRACE with a Satch Capital Grant

Satchel’s Pizza is proud to award their 2019 Satch Capital Grant award to GRACE, a project of the Alachua County Coalition for the Homeless and Hungry. GRACE is a one-stop assistance center and emergency shelter on a mission to end homelessness in Alachua County. The Satch Capital Grant is funded by Satchel’s customers who give their support to local nonprofits by using Satchel’s ATM machines. GRACE was one of 12 applicants for this year’s award.

GRACE provides supportive services, emergency shelter, and permanent solutions to people without housing. Since 2014, GRACE has moved nearly 1,000 people into permanent housing, reducing homelessness by 36% in Alachua County. GRACE will use the award to purchase a box truck to deliver furniture to people as they move into housing. The truck will also be used to pick up donated food, furniture, and household items.

“We’re thrilled to have Satchel’s as a part of Team GRACE,” said GRACE Executive Director Jon DeCarmine. “Their support means the difference between moving people into a house, and moving them into a home.”

GRACE housed 406 people in 2019, and will move another 500 people into housing in 2020. The agency received nearly 100,000 pounds of food from Bread of the Mighty Food Bank in 2019, and served more than 135,000 meals to people in crisis.

Satchel’s gives back to the community in a variety of ways. Satchel’s Giving Programs offer donations in the form of gift cards, quarterly Satch Grants and yearly Satch Cash and Satch Capital awards. THIRD Quarter 2019 Satch Grants

Florida Springs Council is a coalition of 53 environmental organizations working together to ensure the protection and restoration of Florida's springs, the rivers they have created, and our aquifer. FSC helps organizations and citisens navigate the legal, legislative, and regulatory landscape of water protections. This $500 Satch Grant will ensure transportation and educational materials for defenders of the springs as they travel in January 2020 to Tallahassee as they convene the 2020 legislative session.

Helping Hands Clinic seeks to improve the physical and mental well-being of the homeless and poor of Gainesville by delivering comprehensive health care, sensitizing providers to the special needs of the homeless and poor, and engaging the community in meaningful contribution. Helping Hands has been serving the Gainesville community for 30 years. This $500 Satch Grant will fund purchasing of medications and program-supporting supplies that are then provided by licensed practitioners. 

MentorGNV is an opportunity for UF students to make a difference on and off campus. Through MentorGNV UF students work with children in the Alachua County public school system that are struggling. The relationship between the mentors and mentees adds an additional support system in their life. This $500 Satch Grant will fund an end-of-the-year field trip and celebration for the children and their mentors.

2nd Quarter Satch Grant 2019

2nd Quarter Satch Grant 2019 awarded to three different organizations

WGOT Gainesville wins $200 to help ensure their online streaming. WGOT 100.1 FM aims to take back the public airwaves by providing a fresh, engaging, and empowering approach to news, entertainment, cultural and educational programming. By expanding the radio station's limited reach through online streaming they hope to encourage greater listenership and direct participation from the entire community.

The Veteran's Recreational Program (VRP) through Volunteers of America of Florida, Inc. has won a $650 Satch Grant. Studies have shown that outdoor recreational activities can provide powerful therapeutic and healing benefits as well as camaraderie for veterans struggling with combat-related injuries or post-traumatic stress. The VRP serves as an outlet for veterans in our community to learn from one another, most notably the veterans will be taught recreational therapy that can be used as treatment for PTSD. This grant will help VRP take several veterans on fishing, kayaking, golf and/or movie trips.

GRACE Grows has also been awarded a $650 Satch Grant. GRACE Grows mission is to empower people experiencing homelessness through community development, horticulture therapy, and education. The gardens and classrooms are on the property of GRACE Marketplace, the low-barrier homeless shelter with housing and services for transition to homes for guests. This grant will help pay certification for a couple members of GRACE Grows to complete their Horticultural Certification through the Florida Nursery Landscape and Growers Association.

First Quarter Satch Grant 2019

First Quarter SATCH GRANT for 2019 goes to start-up The Lake Forest Elementary School Ukulele Club! The Ukulele Club of Gainesville wants to create opportunities for the students of Lake Forest Elementary School to learn music skills by learning to play the ukulele. This pilot program would impact approximately 20 students. The next roll-out of the program would be expanded to reach all of the third, fourth and fifth grade students during regular class sessions. Approximately 400 children would benefit annually. In five years approximately 2,000 students would benefit from this program.

Research on music education has demonstrated that learning music can help children in many ways, a few of which include language skills, reasoning, memorization, coordination, pattern recognition, teamwork and better SAT scores. One study reported that children who studied music scored 63 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on math on SAT testing Importance of Music in our Schools Studying music positively influences class behavior and by learning music skills these children will be more likely to participate in band in middle and high school.

SATCH CAPITAL GRANTS for calendar year 2018

“Satchel’s awards $12,500 to local organizations through Satch Capital Grants”

Satchel’s Pizza is proud to award Satch Capital Grants to three different and deserving organizations in our community. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Gainesville, FamilyPromise of Gainesville, and The CHILD Center for Early Learning are splitting the award for calendar year 2018. Satch Capital Grants are funded by our customers who give their support to local nonprofits by using Satchel’s ATM machines. The Giving Committee had twenty three applications for this award and after much deliberation three local non profits will receive funds.

$6000 Satch Capital goes to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Gainesville. NAMI Gainesville is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education, support and advocacy to individuals living with mental illness and their families. NAMI Gainesville services include: 1) Free educational courses for individuals living with mental illness, 2) Free support groups for people living with mental illness, 3) Information on resources and advocacy, and 4) Outreach programs that empower individuals and their families to help eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. NAMI Gainesville’s programs help people living with mental illness learn to manage their illness and avoid or prevent mental health crisis events that can lead to incarceration, homelessness and suicide. The classes, support groups and presentations are free and held at various locations in Gainesville to better serve all its residents. This Satch Capital Grant will fund certification and training of three additional teachers for NAMI Gainesville’s educational courses.

Family Promise of Gainesville receives $5000 in Satch Capital. Family Promise is a community-wide response to end childhood homelessness. Through the collaborations of local faith communities, Family Promise of Gainesville provides homeless children and their families with compassionate care that includes case management, education, housing, meals and transportation until they can transition to a home of their own. The Satch Capital Grant will allow Family Promise to purchase a new trailer and refurbish their existing trailer. These trailers are used to move approximately 30,000 pounds of furniture annually.

The third Capital Grant of $1500 is awarded to The CHILD Center for Early Learning. The CHILD Center is an innovative and collaborative partnership that works to bring the collective experience and expertise of several organizations together to give children, families and child care professionals the best experience possible. Funding will help The CHILD Center equip their Art Shed with tables, chairs and supplies needed for their outside art classroom.
